NATIONS OF AEDIRN | ▸ SANCTUM OF CAMBRIA
| The Sanctum of Cambria is located on the western end of Aedirn’s continent of Drachma. It is bordered to the west by shallow waters and to the east by steep mountains. These geographic features make Cambria a place of relative safety. The Cambrian region is known to contain the City of Cambria and several coastal cities, as well as Kerwon, a small island to the west. Cocoon Academy, one of the five main Hunter Academies of Aedirn, is located in the City of Cambria while Pulse Academy is located on the island of Kerwon. At attempt to expand the reach of the region to the east resulted in an ill-fated extension in the Dunwich Mountains.
Originally, the Sanctum was ruled by a monarchy with the throne’s occupant claiming the title of Emperor or Empress. However, the Caliga family has been thought to be deceased ever since the conclusion of the Great War after the Last Emperor abdicated his throne. Now, the Sanctum is ruled by a Council due to the Last Emperor’s grand vision of the post-war world of Aedirn. Sitting on the Council are five individuals who oversee one major aspect of Cambrian society such as the military or domestic affairs. The Headmaster of Cocoon Academy also maintains a seat on the Council; however, their primary focus is towards the training of new generations of Hunters.
Cambria draws from real world cultures such as the United States of America and the German Empire with their military forces wearing uniforms that resemble the Amestrian Army from Full Metal Alchemist.
| ▸ RONASTRIAN EMPIRE
| Residing off the northeastern coasts of Yggdrasil, the Ronastrian Empire’s natural defenses are both steep mountains and intense cold. Due to the harshness of the region, the Empire boasts a considerable edge in both military and civilian technologies, this is due primarily to early settlers needing to adapt to the cold that keeps them relatively safe from daemons. Oceanaria is unique among the nations in that while its military, government, and Hunter Academy all function as a single entity.
Ronastre’s capital was once the city of Cathcart where its Emperor ruled the Empire with an iron fist. Ronastre had forged an alliance with the Commonwealth of Elysium trading prismere based technologies and even educated the Elysians on how to settle the snowier regions of their territories. It was during the Great War when the city of Cathcart was sacked by the Sanctum of Cambria and subsequently destroyed along with the Karnstein family; however, military leaders had practically been running the Empire during the fifteen years of warfare and the loss of the monarchy did little to force their surrender. When the War concluded, and the reforms passed, the Empire would move its capital to the city of Babel which shared the same name as its newly founded Hunter Academy.
Ronastre draws from real world cultures such as the Kingdom of Italy in the 1920s and the German Democratic Republic while their military forces actively resemble the ShinRa Company troopers from Final Fantasy VII.
| ▸ COMMONWEALTH OF ELYSIUM
| Residing along the southeastern coast of Denarii, the Commonwealth is guarded by a heavy military presence due to the lack of natural defenses other than its shallow waters. Elysium remains one of the more artistic capitals of Aedirn due to a mixture of various peoples mixing together. Elysium’s Hunter Academy, Avalon Academy, is located on the Olympia Islands that the nation was founded on.
Elysium, like many of the nations, once had a vastly different system of government, an absolute monarchy established by the founder of Elysium, Persephone Basilisa. The Basilisa line, unlike the Caligas of Cambria or the Karnsteins of Ronastre, is still alive and well today, though they hold no positions of authority within the Commonwealth. Instead, the Basilisa line is regarded with the same pedigree as many wealthy families across the nations. While the Council may hold authority within the city of Parnassus, the more isolated areas allow for more unsavory criminal elements to flourish such as the Frumentarii, a guild of assassins that can eliminate a target for the right price.
Elysium draws from real world cultures such as the Victorian England and the Greco-Roman Empires while their military forces resemble the Dunwall City Watch from Dishonored.
| ▸ KINGDOM OF ADVENT
| Resting on the southwestern island just off Drachma’s coast is the Kingdom of Advent. Advent is defined not by its adherence to rigid militarism or its love of the arts, but rather by its faith. Faith is what defines Advent as its Hunter Academy, Eden, was built from a repurposed chapel. Unlike most the other nations, Advent is more known for its food exports as opposed to weapons or technology. This isn’t to suggest that Advent lacks in technology, far from it, Advent just has access to far more farmland than most of the other nations do.
Advent is the founding nation of the Letoist faith that encompasses all of Aedirn. The ecclesiarchal leadership is headed by the Presimpero and prior to the Great War even wielded temporal power equal to that of foreign leaders at the time. Though officially neutral during the Great War, the Kingdom of Advent did supply the Cambrian and Zorranian forces with food and medicinal supplies often leading to frustration from the Ronastrian and Elysian leadership. However, the Great Reforms saw the establishment of Advent’s Council and the abolishment of the Presimpero’s temporal power. Now, the Adventi Council holds the interests of the people at its heart.
Advent draws from real world cultures such as the Papal States and the Swiss Confederation while their military forces resemble the Knights Templar from The Secret World.
| ▸ ZORRAN CONFEDERATION
| Deep in the Korviri Desert is the Zorran Confederation. Though surrounded by harsh sands, the walls of Zorran encapsulate an oasis of sorts that provides some semblance of stability to the crowded streets of the nation. Though nominally ruled by a Council, Zorran prides itself on not requiring much in the way of state oversight as laws are based around not violating the non-aggression principle. While there is a City Watch and even a military presence, the only true source of law and order is that of Ridorana Academy, Zorran’s Hunter Academy. There is very little in the way of racial prejudice in the nation as it is hard for one to hate another who sweats and bleeds the same as his or her compatriots as such there is one unspoken custom: If you can survive, then you are welcome in Zorran.
Unlike most of the other nations, Zorran has always had a Council and in many ways the Zorranian Council provided the Last Cambrian Emperor with the inspiration to reform the other nations prior to his abdication. The Zorranian Council refer to themselves as Los Nueve Lobos (The Nine Wolves) and are each fervently devoted to the idea of protecting what remains of their land no matter the cost. When Korviri was a lush green forest, Zorran was primarily viewed as the trading hub of the world; however, in the aftermath of the Great War, the Zorranian economy has never truly recovered as the forests turned to sand. The people of Zorran are a stubborn and hardy people; however, as they have adapted as best as they can hope to in the desert and while economically crippled, the nation does manage to stay afloat with generous supplies of Adventi food and medicine and even Ronastrian technology.
Zorran draws from real world cultures such as The Kingdom of Spain and the Ottoman Empire while their military forces resemble the Tallarn Desert Raiders from Warhammer 40,000.
| ▸ REPUBLIC OF TENGOKU
| The Lotus Isles bore no practical purpose to any of the other nations across the continent of Drachma; however, in the aftermath of the Great War the island chain was bequeathed to the merovani as compensation for their contributions in the Great War. For a time, the merovani had accepted their new land with gratitude; however, when the nations began trying to encourage all of the merovani to move to the Lotus Isles, it became clear to some that the Lotus Isles were simply a dumping ground to confine the merovani. While all of the Isles are technically under the Republic’s jurisdiction, only the island of Amaterasu is considered populated; however, like Zorran, the vast majority of Amaterasu is considered desert and thus the population is confined to the coastal regions. Unlike the other nations, Tengoku lacks a Hunter Academy and instead relies on the other five to train prospective hunters for their own defense against the daemons that plague their lands.
Unlike the other nations, Tengoku possesses a unique form of government with its head of state claiming the title of Chancellor. The Chancellor wields power comparable to each nation’s council and is tempered by his or her small council which is comprised of whomever the Chancellor feels is best suited for the position. When the nations of the world began trying to push for the confinement of the merovani to the Lotus Isles, it sparked a fierce backlash and resulted in what would become known as the Silent Struggle. The Struggle would see war-weary nations clash with Tengoku over the issue of merovani confinement and while it did not result in a Tengo victory, it did see the nations abandon their push for the merovani to be confined. Even still, the Republic is regarded as a safe haven for the merovani who flee from persecution and has even been considered the foundation for the Equalist movement that has spread across all of Drachma.
Tengoku draws from real world cultures such as the Commonwealth of Australia and various East Asian cultures while their military forces resemble the Fire Nation from the Avatar series.
